['græmə skuːl, englisch], in Großbritannien und Nordirland auf die Universität vorbereitende Schule, in der besonders klassische Studien einen wichtigen Platz einnehmen. Das Eintrittsalter liegt im Allgemeinen bei 11 oder 12 Jahren. Die Grammarschool kann nach drei oder vier Jahren mit einem qualifizierten Abschluss, dem »General certificate of secondary education« (GCSE) - es ersetzt seit 1988 den Osten(rdinary) level -, verlassen werden oder nach weiteren zwei bis drei Jahren mit dem A(dvanced) level. Jede Grammarschool ist eine eigene, von einem »Headmaster« geleitete Körperschaft. Die Grammarschool wurde im Allgemeinen durch die Comprehensive School ersetzt; sie kommt als öffentliche Schule nur noch in Nordirland vor.
